Our vision is for the Macedon Ranges Shire to be powered entirely by renewable energy.  The purpose of the Macedon Ranges Renewable Energy Fund (MR REF) is to increase the amount of renewable energy produced in the Macedon Ranges Shire while reducing overall energy consumption.  MR REF provides interest-free loans to community groups and schools to install solar panels or similar, and these loans are paid back over time from the realised cost savings. The repayments are then used by MR REF to invest in new projects.  Using this model, donations to the fund will keep on giving indefinitely, or until the entire Shire is powered by 100% renewable energy!

The Macedon Ranges Shire has one of the highest uptakes of solar panels on private houses, but have hardly any on community buildings. The great advantage of utilising renewable energy from solar panels is that they not only reduce the amount of coal being burned, but they also save money for community groups which can be put to better use.

Our first project was the Woodend Primary School, which has installed a 30kW solar power system, enough to cover half of their energy consumption and save thousands of dollars every year. Almost all of the energy produced is used on site (behind the meter) instead of being fed into the grid. This means the savings will pay back the loan in 4-5 years time, and then continue to reduce the energy bill for the lifetime of the system - a further 20 years.

Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to get involved.

All donations to this great community project are greatly appreciated, and will help us achieve our goal of a 100% renewable Macedon Ranges! You can now donate online via credit card here. Your regular donations will enable us to plan ahead. Thank you!
